Going Green: Mangrove Preservation

An Interesting news clip from the Philippines ANC channel (broadcasted on August 20th) which talks about the importance of mangroves and the need to change the approaches and attitudes towards planting.

The clip highlights the fact that mangrove restoration should be conducted in abandon fishponds and not on mud flats and seagrass beds which has been the case so far. The case so far for planting in these wrong areas as pointed out in the clip is due to political tension over land ownership of the abandon fishponds which has led to other areas being sought for planting. Planting is also criticised for being aimed at increasing area instead of being aimed at restoration of historical and traditional sites.

It really nice to hear others advocating what I have been talking about for such a long time………

The month of May is the Month of the Ocean in the Philippines, and as part of this Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has launch a project to plant over 1100  mangrove trees in Casiguran, Aurora not only help to protect the country’s coastal regions but also in the words of  DENRpreserve livelihood of the people in Casiguran and to strengthen the overall economic strength of the country“. Clearly this is an indication of a move by DENR to restore mangroves as a source of livelihood and has to be seen as a positive thing providing they can maintain and protect such projects.

There has been much uncertainty about the extent of mangroves left remaining in the World, as result of this the  ITTO commissioned a revised World Atlas of Mangroves, this was published in 2010 by Earthscan and contains the most update information of the state of mangroves today.

A report by International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN ), last found that more than 1 in 6 mangroves are endangered, placing 16% of mangrove species on the IUCN Red list. The full article can be found here:  Mangrove forests in worldwide decline.
